St. Teresa’s Academy is offering an enhanced Advanced Algebra I class next year to eighth grade girls who are talented in mathematics and excited to learn. St. Teresa’s Academy is committed to the development of mathematical skills in young women to support their interest in pursuing STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) fields, or simply becoming more innovative and critical thinkers.
At a cost of $1,000, this class will provide a full year of Advanced Algebra I. Class will meet on St. Teresa’s Academy campus starting Wednesday, August 18th from 7:00 to 7:40 a.m. during the mornings that school is in session, and before the regular school day begins at your daughter’s elementary/middle school.
Some of the advantages for taking this course include:
- One full high school math credit will be granted upon successful completion of this class and $500 of the course fee will be applied to your daughter’s freshman year tuition at STA.
- Transcripts will reflect the grade and credit earned, but will not be calculated into your daughter’s GPA. She will still need to earn four math credits during her four years at STA.
- tudents successfully completing the course will be considered for placement into Geometry or Advanced Geometry their freshman year.
- Opportunities are available for college dual enrollment and Advanced Placement in math and science during your daughter’s junior and senior years as well as in computer science courses.
- Note: five recorded absences from the class per semester may lower the student’s grade for the course.
The core components of an Advanced Algebra I curriculum will be included but with a focus on more exploratory and authentic applications. Students will develop their technology skills and be issued an STA device. The following areas will be explored:
- Real Numbers
- Linear Equations
- Fractions & Applications
- Lines & Functions
- Systems of Equations
- Exponents & Polynomials
- Factoring Polynomials
- Quadratic Functions
- Rational & Irrational Numbers

Belinda Toma is about to start her fourth year as a math teacher at St. Teresa’s Academy. Prior to joining STA, Belinda taught for 11 years at a diocesan school in New Jersey. Teaching high school math is a second career for Belinda. Belinda graduated from Boston College with a degree in management and economics and worked for many years in the banking industry. While tutoring students for the S.A.T. Belinda discovered her passion for teaching high school students.
While at STA, Belinda has taught the Advanced Algebra I/II course as well as Algebra II. She is looking forward to teaching the Advanced Algebra 1 class this year where she can expose her students to higher-level Algebra concepts to challenge their critical thinking skills while also developing their voice in the classroom. Belinda is excited to guide this group of 8th graders in taking their first steps toward high school.
